Recipe for Five Grain Buns
What You Need
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup oats
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1/4 cup wheat bulgur
  • 1/4 cup rye flour
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 Tablespoon boiling water
  • 1 Tablespoon sugar
  • 3/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 2 packages dry yeast
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 cup wheat flour
  • 6 to 8 cups white flour
How to Make It
Prepare a baking sheet by lightly applying cooking spray and then set aside until needed.
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
Using a large mixing bowl you will add the salt, oats; cornmeal, wheat bulgur, and rye flour and combine well. Add the vegetable oil and mix until well blended.
Add the boiling water and then allow it to stand be cool down to a lukewarm temperature. Add the yeast to the lukewarm water and then add the sugar. Mix well and then combine with the other ingredients you have combined in the large mixing bowl.
Add the egg and molasses and mix well. Gradually add the wheat flour and white flour. Work the dough by kneading it until your create a firm dough texture that will not stick.
Add a little vegetable oil into a large mixing bowl and then place the dough inside the oiled bowl. Cover it with a dry, clean dishtowel and allow it to rise until it doubles its size. Push the dough down and knead it for about 10 minutes.
Divide the dough into bun size pieces and then shape the buns into loaves. Place on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops of the five grain buns with a beaten whole egg. Place them in the preheated oven to bake for about 20 to 25 minutes or until they are a light golden brown in color.
